Language Training

QAAW
Phonemic-Awareness Activities for 3- to 6-Year-Olds
1. How’s this book organized?
This book is a collection of integrated English oral-language activities. The activities appear in the 170 (15 minute) daily lessons. This book includes a 35-minute training DVD.

All lessons are written in easy-to-follow lesson plan format that saves the teacher valuable planning time. The lessons are also scripted, which means that words are always provided for the teacher to say, and appropriate responses by the students are given. The script is meant to be used as a guide for the teacher. Some teachers might stay close to the scripted words, and others will use it occasionally or not at all. Of course, an advantage of the scripting is that teachers don't have to leave detailed notes for a substitute.

2. What is meant by integrated oral-language activities?
Words initially taught in one activity may be reinforced one, two, or more times in other activities. For example, words introduced as synonyms one day might be used as homophones the next day or as part of a figurative-language expression several days after that. This integrated approach is a key component in Oral-Language QAAW.

3. Who's this book for?

Advanced 4-year-olds who are getting ready for kindergarten;

Kindergartners who enter school one or more years behind in English oral-language development;

Older students who have special needs in developing English-language skills;

Beginning ESL/ELL students.

The activities in this book can be used with large or small groups or with individual students.

4. Who can teach the lessons in this book?
Teachers, paraprofessionals, instructional aides, and parents can teach from this book’s easy-to-follow lesson plans.

5. Does this book require any special training?
No and yes! Oral-Language QAAW requires no special on-sight training; however, before teaching the first lesson, the following three things must be done.

1.
Alaska Learning English

Watch the 35-minute training DVD, which provides a thorough introduction and training session.

2.

Read the Introduction Sections 1, 2, and 3 (pages 2-24).

3.

6. How many activities are there, and what are they?
Here is a list of the 24 activities. The five Core Foundation Activities are on the left side of the following chart. Many of the other 19 activities are used as reinforcement for the skills learned in the Core Foundation Activities.

7. How do I know which words are used in the core foundation activities?
Each core foundation activity has two lists. The first list is important when looking at the larger picture for what words will be taught and for developing review and/or assessments. The second list organizes the words alphabetically, which provides the teacher with a quick reference to the words and the lesson numbers the words appear in.

8. How can I connect the lessons to district and state standards?
I've provided a page that lists objectives for all 24 activities.

9. How many minutes should one lesson take?
Once you're familiar with the activities, one lesson can be completed within 15 minutes––some lessons taking less time and some taking the full 15 minutes. Of course, teaching a group of students will probably take more time as compared to teaching only one or two students due to more students taking part in the activities.

10. I have an aide for an hour each day. Can aides use these lesson plans?
Absolutely––teachers, paraprofessionals, instructional aides, and parents can use this book’s easy-to-follow lesson plans. Before the first lesson is taught, the two of you need to do the three things listed in the answer of question five. By doing these together, both of you will be equally familiar with the contents and format.

11. Can I see a complete lesson plan?
Yes. The lesson plan I have for viewing and downloading covers Lessons 76-80, which is almost halfway through the book.

12. Are there assessments?
No, because assessments must be tailored to the specific needs of your students. It would be unrealistic to construct a universal assessment that could be used for advanced four-year-olds as well as older students who need a stronger English-language foundation. Additionally, many students using Oral-Language QAAW have already been tested and have detailed IEPs that call for activities to address their English-language deficit, which is exactly what this book provides.

If it’s necessary to test students while doing the activities, I have provided an example of an assessment in the book, used the same assessment in the training DVD, and discussed how it was constructed and scored. So, if students do need testing based on the activities in this book, there is an example to help the teacher.

13. How much does Oral-Language QAAW cost?
This book costs $200.00 for a year’s worth of lesson plans (170). This book is completely reusable, so it can be used year after year. Also, there are no workbooks or additional things to buy––ever. And, the shipping is free!
