 Welcome to our company's website! I'm Sandra Covey, author of the two Learning Language Quick as a Wink! (QAAW) books.
I'm a retired teacher with 25 years of teaching experience in grades pre-kindergarten through adult education. When I got my master's degree in elementary reading many years ago, it was not to become a school-wide reading teacher; I got it to help me teach reading in my classroom. But, as we all know, experience is often the more powerful teacher, and believe me, teaching kindergarten through eighth grade for five years in a one-room schoolhouse in Alaska provided the best education!
Teaching children who entered school one or more years behind in English oral-language development helped me understand what these students needed to become successful readers went far beyond teaching phonics. What they needed were strong receptive and expressive English-language vocabularies to provide meaning and context to the words they learned to read. I also learned that off-the-shelf reading programs lacked the in-depth language activities that my students needed.
The Quick as a Wink Learning division of JSC Consulting was created in 2000 and is dedicated to providing English oral-language and pre-reading activities in lesson-plan format for preschool and primary-grade students.
